National governments are increasingly encouraging universities to focus
more strongly on research impact: on the contribution that research makes to society,
economy, health, and the environment, and not just its contribution to academia. An
example of research impact is the control of the Ebola epidemic in West Africa. The
outbreak of Ebola was successfully conquered with the combined efforts of university,
charitable foundation, industry and regulator.
