This chapter looks at the concept of a VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex
and Ambiguous) environment brought on by politics, society, economy and the
environment. To counter uncertainty and ambiguity in this environment, internal
organizational simplicity is needed to enable an institution to be agile and responsive. It
requires a different focus on strategy and leadership development – one which focuses
on vision, understanding, clarity, and agility.
